GENESIS CANYON

(1996)

A SITE-SPECIFIC WORK FOR THE GRAND ENTRANCE HALL OF THE NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM, LONDON

Produced and Commissioned by the Dance Umbrella Festival

Val Bourne,  Artistic Director

SEPTEMBER 28, 29, 1996 (TWO PERFORMANCES PER DAY)

Artists Statement:

Genesis Canyon began in 1993 with a phone call from Val Bourne (Artistic Director of the Dance Umbrella Festival) inviting me to explore London for possible performance sites. After an extensive search in this beautiful city, I selected the grand entrance hall of the Natural History Museum for several reasons. It is a stunning building in terms of design, history, tradition and is an important part in the lives of the people it serves, the public.

Genesis Canyon has been conceived, created, directed and cast completely with the design of the building and the mission of the institution it houses in mind. This is n ot a work meant to be seen anywhere else but within these terra-cotta walls.

Genesis Canyon is a choral work for both movement and voice and is the result of six intensive weeks of rehearsals on site at the Natural History Museum. Genesis Canyon is designed to be seen by an audience standing from all vantage points around the entrance hall. The work lasts 45 minutes without interruption.

Genesis Canyon FULL Program

‘Genesis Canyon’ wins Best Production. No one who saw this site-specific event at the Natural History Museum (and all five of its performances were chock-a-block) can be in any doubt about the special excitement generated by this vibrant Dance Umbrella commission. Created by American choreographer Stephan Koplowitz with 40 UK dancers, a score by Jonathan Stone and designs by Craig Givens, ‘Genesis Canyon’

was truly a magical moment. This award goes to each and every person involved.

“Genesis Canyon" stands out because of its refreshingly straightforward

imagery...Rich imagery and brevity are the two winning factors of this performance, which never gets weary.... The key word here is entertainment, much to the dismay of those who consider culture and sheer enjoyment as not compatible. And good entertainment it is.”

“Genesis Canyon, conceived and directed by Stephan Koplowitz, was beautiful, breathtaking and fun.”
